On June 21, after a month of filming, the principals of The Pelican Brief held a press conference in their new location, Washington, D.C. Reporters found Julia a vastly different woman from the sullen, suspicious star who had met the press in December 1991 to promote Hook. She was relaxed, even friendly, and her sense of humor had returned. Asked if she felt rusty after two years off, she replied with a grin, “I don’t feel rusty. Do I look rusty?”

She didn’t. In fact, the glow and the smile that had made Julia a superstar were again in full flower; her hair, once again long and a light brown, fell insouciantly around her shoulders. Clearly, the time off had done her a world of good. “I think I came back with some renewed vigor … I’ve been giddy.”

The assembled reporters dutifully jotted down the quote—“I’ve been giddy”—without knowing its full import. Time magazine offered a hint in an item about the press conference in its July 5 issue. “If Hollywood were a milk carton, Julia Roberts would be pictured on its side. ‘Colossal star missing from feature films. Last seen: Hook, 1991.’ Look no further. At a press conference to inaugurate the Washington shoot of her thriller The Pelican Brief … Julia invited reporters to focus on her work—a plea that clearly went unheeded. Days later, a New York tabloid focused instead on her rumored romance ‘with quirky balladeer Lyle Lovett.’”

Lyle Lovett? The gangly country crooner with the craggy face, drunkard’s-path grin, and towering hair that People described as a “thatch of nuclear-radiated alfalfa sprouts”? It couldn’t be. The Pretty Woman’s gallery of lovers to date had featured only some of the best-looking men in the world.

Julia denied she and Lovett were romantically involved. When a reporter asked if she was “seeing” him, she replied, “That’s funny … I mean, I do know Lyle. He played here in D.C. and a whole bunch of us went. We went on this big bus because there were about twenty-five of us from the crew. And you know how they always have the destination spelled out on the front of those buses? Ours said: ‘Lost.’ It just seemed so perfect.”

For once, a star’s denial of a romance rumor seemed plausible. But as readers thumbed through their new issue of Time a week later, they learned that Julia and the offbeat, introspective singer-songwriter had already exchanged wedding vows.
